Is letting Ryan Strome become a free agent such a bad thing?

Per Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers are still looking to deal Ryan Strome, a rumor that has been relatively known for a while. Friedman predicts Ottawa, Seattle, and Vegas as destinations for Strome, all of which have been rumored before.

The three teams couldn’t be more different in terms of trade partners. Ottawa is likely looking at Strome as a cost savings, perhaps viewing him as less expensive than a younger kid due a new contract. They’ve made those kinds of trades before.

Meanwhile Seattle is looking for a 1C, and Strome has actually fit that bill the last two seasons. For them, that would put Yanni Gourde as their 2C and Jared McCann as their 3C. It’s not the worst center depth for a team entering its first season.

Vegas is looking for any possible way to stay in the hunt. They have been a great story since their expansion season, but William Karlsson is their only legitimate center right now.

All three have reasons. Now it’s about Chris Drury’s plan and what he thinks moves the Rangers into contention for an extended period of time. There’s reason to be optimistic, but there’s reason to be fearful as well.
