The last time the Rangers faced San Jose, they lost 9-2 in an absolute embarrassment of a game. This time around, it will be different (hopefully). The Sharks are no longer the white-hot team that steamrolled the opposition in October. After their absurd start, they have fallen off a bit. They are still playing great hockey, but they aren’t blowing opponents away anymore. The Rangers have found their game, although they might have misplaced it this month. Either way, that 9-2 drubbing is definitely fresh on the minds of this Rangers club.

On the ice, coach Todd McLellan has his Sharks mostly running an aggressive 2-1-2 forecheck, but will mix in some 1-2-2 depending on game situation. In the defensive zone schemes they overload the boards and play zone defense when the puck is at the points or down low. The power play is a 1-3-1 and their penalty kill formations are hybrid (depends on puck location/opposition setup).

  1. Bloomer says:

The Sharks have a lot of offensive weapons. Errand passes in the neutral zone will find their way in the back of the net if the Rangers are sloppy. The season is winding down and the Rangers have yet to lock themselves a playoff spot, they need to put together a solid effort here.

    • Puck Luck @Centerman21 says:

The Flyers won a 2nd in a row in a home & home against the Pens. With the Blue Jackets getting 2 points last night the Rangers currently sit outside the top 3 in the division. That to me is huge. This is a must win. The Flyers also have 2 games in hand on the Rangers and lead us by a point. The 2 losses(Car & Philly) hurt badly. Every game is a must win from here on to the playoffs.

  2. Dave says:

Can we give Diaz a shot already…the team is struggling to score goals, and it’s not like Strallman has been playing well lately. If not, what was the point in sacrificing that 5th round pic?!?!

    • The Suit says:

I like how AV says Klein had his best game the other night and the reward is staying on the third unit and keeping Stralman on the second. #Adjustments

  3. Bloomer says:

Klein did play better as sometimes I think its a bit challenging playing with John Moore. I like Moore’s skill level but often he is indecisive in his own end. Once he gets some more seasoning, I think he be a very good blue liner.

  4. Spozo says:

Toronto make a call that goes against the Rangers. That’s a complete shocker.

    • Bloomer says:

I don’t like to rant about referees or bad calls, but they was the worst under review decision I have ever seen. The puck crossed the goal line it was clear as day in the replay. There was nothing to be left to discretion, no kicking motion, high stick or late whistle-nada. It was an very erroneous decision not to allow that goal, and really, it makes the National Hockey League look like a Mickey Mouse organization. If shoe was on the other foot and the Sharks had their goal disallowed in the same situation….I would be just as disgusted.

      • TxRanger says:

Carl got that goal, that was a bad call, especially on home ice.

        • Chris F says:

It sucks bad knowing that the puck literally had to have crossed the line.

It’s the way the rule is written regarding that, though, since we don’t actually see It cross passed the red and show white ice. That rule needs to be revised but until they do, these clusters will contine.

  5. Leatherneckinlv says:

1-0 loss….frankly St Louis is not a fit on this team. He has become a distraction….Some players fit some do not…St Louis just does not

  6. Chris F says:

MSL needs a Stamkos or Crosby to thrive. Callahan fits with this team so much better.

This group is in alot of trouble. I desperately want to have confidence, but I just don’t have it. Down 1-0 with 8 minutes left, I knew they wouldn’t come back. Last couple of years, I would have hope down to the last second.

  7. Sally says:

Oh that will be the next trade–some to get MSL going.
