The Rangers dominated Pittsburgh last night, and will be looking to build on that momentum against a Columbus Blue Jackets club that has lost four straight. The matchup tonight is an intriguing one, as the Rangers and Blue Jackets have been partners in two blockbuster deals. Rick Nash came to New York for Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Tim Erixon (in Springfield) and a 1st round pick. A year later, Marian Gaborik was sent to Columbus for Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett, and John Moore.

Under Todd Richards, the Blue Jackets run a 2-1-2 forecheck, but with less active defensemen. In the DZ, CBJ uses a low zone collapse in the defensive zone. On special teams, they run a 1-3-1 power play, and a box penalty kill.

Rangers Lineup:

Derick Brassard-Brian Boyle-Benoit Pouliot
Taylor Pyatt-Derek Dorsett-J.T. Miller

So who is gonna drop the gloves with Brandon ” I got traded by flashy NY so they could have a new toy” Dubinsky?

    Callahan? Wouldn’t that be something?

    • VinceR says:

Just because reporters love to stir the pot, here’s the rest of the quote courtesy of Andrew Gross:

“But sometimes that’s just how New York is, they like the flash and they want the dash and they want a new toy, I guess. And that’s no disrespect to the organization because they were so great to me. But, like I said, that was the hardest part. But when you get traded for a guy like Nash, he’s one of the elite players in the league, you can’t lose sight of that, he’s one of the best players in the NHL so I understand you have to give up some assets. I feel like they wouldn’t have just given me away for nothing.”

      • Chris F says:

Just strikes me as a little bitter for a guy who was handed a huge contract and did nothing with it.

I loved Duby, but he has to understand that his being traded was his own fault and nothing else.

I’m loving that 1-3-1 PP right now. So pretty. What team am I watching?

Has there ever been a weaker Ranger team at clearing the puck??? Every chance that Columbus is getting is coming off piss-poor clearing plays. Girardi looks like he doesn’t have a clue!!!! Either they still haven’t grasped the new system, or they just can’t play it. If thats the case, this team is in REAL trouble!!! This came should be a laugher, but its set up for a realy bad loss!

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

The bigger issue is the Rangers sitting on the lead in the 3rd. Very passive.

    *game

At least they won! This team is going nowhere unless they clear up their own end. Tune out all the nonsense coming from Micheletti about how well the D is playing. They ARE NOT!! I never thought I would see the day when Stralman would be their most reliable D man. The rest of them are always over-handling the puck, coughing it up, or short-arming all of there clearing passes. It gets comical watching them. They always seem to have problems clearing the zone. Even when there is NO pressure!. I’m not gonna blame the forwards for this. Just watch the tape. Its like the Defense has no concept of how to get the puck out of their zone. It can’t go on like this. The rest of the team is just not that good enuf to bail them out.

3rd game in 4 nights. Sloppy third period, but that usually happens when you get tired legs.

      Talbot another awesome performance

      Looked great overall.

      Another win

    • Chris F says:

Honestly Joe, you sound like a bitter old curmudgeon. You’re over exaggerating the defensive zone lapses and overlooking the back-to-back factor.

This team just whacked the Pens 5-1, then flew to Columbus to knock off a hungry Blue Jackets squad 4-2. But, yea, they’re just not that good, you’re right.

      • joe719 says:

I’m glad you agree! They’re not that good. Not yet. Take away their goaltending the last few nights, and this would be really embarrassing. Hank saves their asses in the first period vs. Pitt, and Talbot saves them at the end tonight. Take a look at the tape, turn down the commentary, and watch how many times the defense gets caught over-handling the puck leading to turnovers; many of them unforced. Open your eyes the defensemen on this team are having a hard time making the right reads in their own zone. The only difference between now and 2 weeks ago, is that the goaltending has been stellar. Dont get me wrong, the forwards are playing pretty darn well, even without Nash. I have no problem with their effort and the results. But games are won in the defensive zone, and this group is giving up way too many chances a game. Its gonna come back to bite them sooner or later.

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

There were some lapses, but overall the dmen have been excellent. Not sure what you’re seeing. Staal and mcdonagh have played exceptional. Girardi hasn’t looked sharp at times, but the d in general isn’t the problem.

    • Spozo says:

They played 3 games in 4 nights. They flew to Columbus after the Pittsburg game and didn’t get to their hotel until 2 am. They have won 5 out of 6. They didn’t play their best tonight but came out with a win in a game they should have won. I think they can get a little slack for the sloppy play tonight. Oh yea they have won 5 out of 6.

  7. Dave says:

Goal breakdown will be up tomorrow morning. Sorry for the delay again folks.
