Game 5: Just don’t get embarrassed vs. St Louis

The Rangers are in St. Louis trying to avoid getting embarrassed for a third straight game after losing the last two by a combined score of 15-2 in San Jose and Anaheim. That 15-2 shellacking includes a four period run where the Rangers were outscored 13-1. Suffice it to say, I think we would be ok with New York not looking like a pee-wee team tonight. That will be tough, as Ken Hitchcock’s Blues are a formidable opponent.

St. Louis runs an aggressive 2-1-2 overload forecheck, but tend to switch to a 1-2-2 with a lead late in the period, though the way the Rangers are playing there’s probably no point on sitting back. They are fairly aggressive when it comes to defensive zone schemes, playing an overload style and collapsing down when the puck is down low. Their power play strategy is a 1-3-1, and their penalty kill formation is a hybrid.

Rangers lineup (probable):

Justin Falk-Dominic Moore-Derek Dorsett

Martin Biron gets the start.

I thought Biron was gonna start tonight. Wasn’t that the report a few days ago.

  2. Dave says:

    My bad.

  3. bloomer says:

Biron not starting? At this juncture I don’t supposed it matters as neither netminders have looked sharp. It will be interesting to see if the squad plays it tight tonight and gets back defence first. The Blues will make them pay if they continue to play pond hockey.

    • Spozo says:

I hope this isn’t an indication of the workload Hank is going to get this season. He’s going to start every game Sweden plays in the Olympics as well. 60-65 seems to be a great number. Let’s hope AV is accounting for the Olympics as well.

  4. Spozo says:

Interesting that they are dressing 7 defenseman.

  5. Chris F says:

Why dress Falk (D) as a forward?

    • Tim B says:

Good question. Probably so they have an extra defender as the defense sucks right now. They can rotate him on the d pairs as well. Or because why would you bench Staal, Mcd, MDZ, Girardi, Stralman or Moore? They are all good. And we need all of them. Falk would only play if there is an injury or as a sub on 4th line.

  6. Jackson says:

I appreciate the honesty in the post title.

  7. VinceR says:

Yeah, I’m about done with Dorsett and his “energy”.

  8. Spozo says:

This wide open hockey is so much better than that boring, shot blocking, offense stifling play of the last three years.

  9. rc says:

The defense has looked exhausted – dressing 7 is the right call.
