The New York Rangers have re-signed defenseman Braden Schneider to a 1 year contract, avoiding arbitration. Schneider’s arbitration date had been set for Wednesday July 29, but naturally that won’t be needed with this short extension. Schneider is the last conundrum for Chris Drury this offseason, as the now 3RD behind Adam Fox and Sean Durzi is quite expensive and now blocking at least one prospect in Scott Morrow.

Braden Schneider does have significant trade value, if the rumors are to be believed. As a 24 year old right handed defenseman, he is thought of highly throughout the league, but it’s only a matter of time before that trade value drops to meet his actual on ice value. As the 3RD on the Rangers, he also represents a luxury at that cap hit that, while affordable for now, isn’t affordable in the long term.

When this contract is up, Schneider will have a qualifying offer of $5.5 million and will be 1 year from unrestricted free agency. He is eligible to sign an extension in January.
