The offseason is slowing to a crawl as most teams are tying up loose ends and navigating the arbitration processes. For the Rangers, the only outstanding item is the Braden Schneider arbitration date, which is set for Wednesday July 29. It’s exceedingly rare that players actually go to arbitration, so we should expect some kind of signed contract in the next two weeks to avoid arbitration. It is in the best interest of both parties to avoid the arbitration hearing, as they can get rather ugly.
Since Schneider elected arbitration, the Rangers will be given a second buyout window three days after the Braden Schneider arbitration date and award, or when he signs, whichever comes first. It’s unlikely the Rangers will use it unless they plan on buying out Joonas Korpisalo (highly unlikely). But worth noting.
Also worth noting is that it’s easier to trade a player, even an RFA, with a contract than without. It eliminates risk for acquiring teams. Even if he’s traded, expect the Rangers to re-sign Schneider first.
