The New York Rangers have added another winger to the mix, signing winger Oliver Bjorkstrand to a one year contract, with a $4.5 million cap hit. Bjorkstrand wrapped up his age-30 season with Tampa, putting up 12-20-32 in 81 games as a middle six winger. Bjorkstrand has since turned 31 in April, so he will play at least his age-31 year with the Rangers, contract dependent.

Like Joe Veleno, Oliver Bjorkstrand is a speedy forward with good defensive numbers, though Bjorkstrand does have more offense to his game than Veleno. Given the surplus of middle/bottom six wings in the organization, this signing is a bit puzzling. Though with Vincent Trocheck and possibly Braden Schneider trades pending, we don’t know which prospects will still be here come September.

Signing Oliver Bjorkstrand is a low risk move by the Rangers. Seems he’s in the mix for third line and special teams time.
