The Rangers have signed center Joe Veleno to a one year contract, cap hit TBD. Veleno is a purely defensive center, but a very good defensive center at that. There is very little offense to his game, both on the score sheet and in play driving. He won 51.6% of his faceoffs last year and is a very fast skater. He is projected to be the 4C on the Rangers. He will likely have Jaro Chmelar on one of his wings, possibly Tye Kartye on the other wing.
Cap hit dependent of course, but Joe Veleno does fill a couple of needs on the Rangers as a speedy 4C who is defensively sound. The lack of play driving makes him fairly one dimensional, but as a bottom of the lineup player it’s not that big of a deal.
Remember, Sam Carrick didn’t have great numbers when coming to the Rangers, and that worked out well. So the jury is still out on Joe Veleno’s impact.
