In the dynamic realm of hockey, the sport offers a plethora of highlights that linger in our memories. The New York Rangers, a team with a rich history, have contributed numerous moments that resonate with many fans. In this feature titled “Remember When,” we delve into some of these moments—some noteworthy, others less so.

In this particular installment of “Remember When,” we revisit December 3rd, 2022, where Rangers captain Jacob Trouba set the tone. The Jacob Trouba helmet toss was a turning point in the season for the Rangers, and could have saved Gerard Gallant’s job that season.

Until this point of the season, the New York Rangers’ season had taken a downturn, teetering on the edge of slipping away. Fresh off a loss to Ottawa the night before and hovering around .500, the Rangers entered the game against the Blackhawks with a lackluster performance.

Cue the entrance of Captain Jacob Trouba. Trouba initiated a hit on Jason Dickinson, followed by another on Jujhar Khaira, sparking a second-period altercation between the two. Despite Chicago adding two more goals, Trouba’s impactful play continued as he leveled Andreas Athansiou at center ice.

This hit set the stage for a captain’s bout between Trouba and Hawks captain Jonathan Toews, accompanied by a skirmish between Connor Murphy and Barclay Goodrow. To cap it off, Trouba skated to the bench, slammed his helmet, and vociferously urged his team to wake up.

Despite the eventual loss in that game, Trouba’s helmet throw and the energy he injected proved instrumental in turning the Rangers’ season around. It’s not as dire this season, but with the Rangers in a bit of a rut, they could use something like this.
