In a little bit of a surprise, the San Jose Sharks have claimed Ty Emberson off waivers from the Rangers. Emberson was waived by the Rangers yesterday as part of a big round of cuts. It’s a little bit surprising since Emberson doesn’t appear to be a viable NHLer yet, and claiming a player off waivers requires him to stay at the NHL level or be subjected to waivers again.

Emberson was the piece acquired from Arizona in the Patrik Nemeth contract dump last offseason. He never really had a spot with this organization beyond an AHL defenseman, as guys like Ben Harpur, Matthew Robertson, Zac Jones, and Connor Mackey were ahead of him on the depth chart.

There are some that really like the kid, so perhaps the Rangers –and to a lesser extent, myself– missed something. Here’s hoping the kid finds a starting job in San Jose.
