Per Mollie Walker, the A NY Rangers emergency recall to address the shorthanded roster issues plaguing them this weekwill not be allowed. This leaves the Rangers shorthanded with just 5 defensemen for the next two games: Ottawa tonight and Boston on Saturday.
Instead, Rangers chose to address roster emergency by adding Kane and as a result, used all their cap space.
Since they essentially put themselves in the man-short situation by adding Kane, league did not approve Rangers for the emergency recall.

Usually the league allowed recalls on an emergency basis for teams in this situation. The crux of the issue is the Rangers created this emergency themselves. Ryan Lindgren was already hurt and K’Andre Miller was already suspended, and they could have used a normal call up to address the issue. Instead, they used their cap space on the Patrick Kane trade.
The Rangers will be shorthanded the next 2 games at least, assuming no other injuries.
