Igor Shesterkin's workload is the key to the Rangers second half.

The Rangers have been saved by Igor Shesterkin the last two games. He’s secured four points in the Metro basically by himself. While that can be cause for concern, the Rangers are down a pair of top six forwards. It’s tough for any team to win like that, not accounting for the new coach, new system, and roster turnover. While the process isn’t overly good in the short term, it will come as the team gets healthy and used to Gerard Gallant. Until then, banking points is equally important for the Rangers.

The Rangers are 3-1-1 and second in the Metro, in a virtual tie with the Caps. It’s way too early for standings to matter now, but the points do. Winners of three in a row and points in four straight, the Blueshirts can make it nine points in five games following the loss to the Caps. After that, it’s Calgary, Columbus, and Seattle. All winnable games. The Rangers can, in theory, close out October with a 6-1-1 record.

Of course the Rangers need a lot to go right for that to happen, as any team can win on any given night. Today seems to be the biggest trap game. Afternoon games always seem to be an issue, at least they were under the last two coaches. Maybe Gallant changes that.

But coming up, the Rangers should at least get Kakko back. They’ve already identified their third line, and Kaapo Kakko gives them what could be their full top line. Ryan Strome’s absence may be extended, as he hasn’t even been on the ice yet.

The process will work itself out. We’ve been adamant that the system and coaching adjustment will take at least through November. For the Rangers to remain relevant and be able to push for a playoff spot, they need to bank points now. The Rangers are doing what they need to, even if it hasn’t been the prettiest product on the ice yet.
