2021 World Juniors: Team USA takes home the gold

Team USA shutout Canada 2-0 in the 2021 World Juniors finals, earning gold. Canada continued its losing streak against the US in the finals, and have not won against the US since 1997.

For the NY Rangers prospects, Brett Berard finished the finals with one shot on goal and 11:59 TOI in the win. Hunter Skinner did not play for Team USA. Braden Schneider had three shots on goal in 17:59 TOI in the loss. Dylan Garand did not play either.

  • Berard did a lot of little things last night. He never stops hustling. Wins puck battle, negated an icing early on by winning the race to the puck, did a nice job of getting under Connor Zary’s skin and others. I noticed he didn’t take any penalties during the tournament which is interesting for his style of play. He was also consistent in his play game in and game out. Glad he will be with Nate Leaman when he goes back to Providence. I realize it’s one tournament, but this kid appears to have some really good upside.

Schneider was fine all in all. Less consistent than Berard. I figure the game misconduct 9 minutes into game 1 and the suspension threw him off a bit. The Russia game in the semi finals was his best game. And he really looked good that night.

Congrats to team USA but sad it’s over!

    • I agree with the Bernard comments. He could be a 5th round steal!

I don’t know if you watched the Canada/Russia semi final game, but Schneider was the best all around defenseman from either team. Had 3 punishing hits and 2 points.

      • I did watch that game and my comment was…
” The Russia game in the semi finals was his best game. And he really looked good that night.”

    • I thought Schneider was pretty damn good last night as well … in fact he outplayed quite a few of Canada’s so-called “better” d’men.

Berard. I want to see more strength and a little more explosiveness in his skating. That isn’t meant as a criticism, he’s where he needs to be right now.

  • I would not be surprised at all to see Nate Leaman as an NHL head coach. He built the Union College team that won the National Championship the year after he left. He’s won a National Championship with Providence. And now, a World Junior championship.
