NY Rangers Play In Round Game 3 Open Thread: Don’t get swept

The Rangers and Hurricanes are at it on the second of a back to back, but at least it’s a night game. The Rangers are in dire straits, needing a win to keep their season going. The Rangers have not been able to get anything going against Carolina, but they are at least defending a little better.

The buck stops with the best players on the roster. Every single one of them needs to be better. While it’s promising to see the great postseasons from Ryan Lindgren and Kaapo Kakko, they shouldn’t be the best players on the team. The top-six needs to perform. The best defensemen need to produce. The entire team just needs to be better.

  • Boy…..I hope all those real good saves by their goalie in the last 2 minutes of 2nd period do not turn out to be the #1 highlight of this game

    • Or was it our inability to put the puck in the freakin net !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • It took too long for the Rangers to get it together. If they played games 1 and 2 as they played game 3, this would have been a different series.
In any event this is probably for the best. They learned a lesson at least the young guys did and Gorton will get another high 1st round pick to work with in this rebuild that isn’t complete. It’s taking shape but not yet complete. They weren’t winning a cup this season. They weren’t getting past the top teams in the East to even get to a Cup final. Might as well add another talented youngster.

  • 3 games and 4 goals scored. Yet the goalie was the biggest controversy. Give me a break people.

The #6 seed played the #11 seed and the better team won.

    • can’t win if you cannot score and this is where the goaltending gets magnified…..Hank and Igor give up 3 goals and the fans go nuts and blame the goalies, the coach, the hot dog vendor…etc……If your best players on offense cannot cannot win..

  • The video of that goal scored against Trouba and DeAngelo is allready getting play on many many twitter accounts …..Deservedly so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Tony is about to have a terrible rest of the summer. He is getting picked apart all over online from that Aho goal lol. The Trump support doesn’t help his situation much.

        • His politics got him kicked out of Arizona. I read he went into that locker room spitting a bunch of Right wing political views.

  • The Rangers looked lethargic and disorganized in this series. I expected more from them. They looked like a bunch of fat cat country club players out there. Gorton needs to lower the boom and dump some of their aging stars during the offseason. Also make a trade for some players who compete every night.

  • Very little from Mika, Buch, ADA, Fox, Kreider except tonight, Trouba is already an albatross of a contract. Never wanted him and always said he was extremely overrated. When Lindgren is your best defenseman, it’s not a good thing. This is no knock on him at all. He was very good all series.

  • well, the rangers didn’t make the playoffs this year. If the goal was to make the playoffs and they came close. Maybe would have done it if the season wasn’t interrupted, maybe not. Good progress by a bunch of our kids, changing of the guard in net, and saw some flashes of what the future could hold with the big guns performing. Reasons for optimism but still lots of wood to chop with this roster before it is a contender.

And I won’t miss DQ after next season.

  • Marc Staal, -2 in 13 minutes of play last night. On for like 6 goals this series.

Let that sink in. I wonder if the Rangers’ front office even has access to info like this?

Putting Howden at C with Chytil is comical and amateurish. If this is the way it’s going to be, then the Rangers have no shot at anything going forward. Nice regular seasons do make for nice playoffs.

Get rid of this coach, he has no business in the NHL. He’s a college coach, it’s that simple.

    • This team doesn’t make the playoffs regardless of who was coaching this team, because the real coach is hidden…and you know who he is….front office…….

    • Marc Staal had a bad series – and maybe even a worse series than the other crappy (this series) defensemen not named Lindgren.

But the first goal was not on him. He was actually having an excellent shift. Made several good takeaways and passes to teammates, who made several turnovers prolonging the shift. Then he broke his stick.

Last night was not on him. I remarked to myself that anyone watching this game could blame it on any Ranger they did not like – except for Kreider and Lindgren, no skater played well.

However, Staal being on the ice for 6 of the ten (non-EN) Cane goals says something. Of course, he was playing with the presumably injured DeAngelo. but still, Marc in his prime could have compensated.

Serious question: Being down a man usually does not result in a goal. Why doesn’t Staal simply leave the game when his stick is broken so the team can replace him – it’s only about ten seconds. Or perhaps alternatively, a forward gives Staal his stick and goes off. Obviously, the Rangers played it like it is always played – but why is it always done this way? Seems dumb to me.

      • Staal plays because of Sather….nice guys for some reason, always play more minuted…hence..Howden…….JD better wake and start cracking the whip……

  • Lady’s and gentlemen, the better team won, it’s that simple. Watching the duo of Jaccob Slavin-Sami Vatanen, and the rest of their defense, this team can go the distance. Her’s why:

    Top notch coach
    Great top line
    Solid, in your face defense
Willingness to get dirty on every play
    Never give up attitude
    Big, strong, skilled players

Our kids should have learned something from this three game series, that being to get to the dance one has got to bust their chops, and want it more than the other guys.

We now have a one in eight chance in the lottery to get the big enchilada, lets see if we can get lucky with this one.

To the team, especially the kids who made this season, although cut short, loads of fun to watch thanks. Enjoy your day folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • I agree Walt..Canes have the better overall players, and with Panarin and Zibs having a quiet series, we were doomed…Our defense needs help…… question and the Sather mandate of playing Staal is played out……Our defensive players moving the puck out of the D zone is like watching a turtle cross the street….disastrous……

  • too many pylons…sick of repeating myself…..This team has some nice players, but the team is not complete, and more work is needed…..

Howden………………all have to go for starters……

    • sick of repeating myself…..

People who are sick of repeating themselves don’t repeat themselves.

Did you even watch this series? How could you not see how much this team missed Jesper Fast? The team got out-grinded.

I agree that the other four should not be part of the future. But, except for Hank, there is no addition by subtraction personnel-wise. It is sad that no Ranger property not in the game (with the possible exception of Darren Raddysh) is as good as Staal, Smith, or Howden, but it is reality. Hajek, Rykov, Andersson, and Kravtsov are not now their equals.

Generally speaking, you build a good team by getting good players and not by getting rid of bad ones.
