NY Rangers Play In Round Game 2 Open Thread: The best gotta be better

The Rangers and Hurricanes again kickoff a full day of hockey with Game 2 this afternoon. Game 1 was very sloppy for both teams, with the majority of it being played on special teams. Today’s game is likely to be played more at even strength.

The Rangers were bad in Game 1. They mistook physicality and intensity for sound hockey, and it cost them on more than one occasion. They will need to bear down and stick to fundamental hockey. Getting in on the forecheck, playing better defensive hockey, and getting more consistent offense.

Playing better is a start, but the best players on the Rangers need to actually play better. Jesper Fast’s injury won’t help matters, but if half the offense comes from Marc Staal, this will be a three game series.

  • Dang 12 pm Hockey games on a Monday are not easy to work around …..And yes I Like Hank a lot ….. but that was a bad goal given up by him ………Hey Dave heard any reason of whats is up with Igor ?????

  • 6 periods of serious beat down. No compete, no puck battle wins, etc. Forget talent, the Rangers were not prepared and did not show up.

So whomever said that before the series, you were right. Just wow. Quinn should have stayed at BU.

    • You are so right……Quinn clearly OUTCOACHED in spades by Brind’Amour! As a big Hank fan, it’s sad to see him get lit up in playoff games where he use to excel. Maybe it’s time to retire graciously. Hank is our Dan Marino……nothing wrong with that!

      • For Hank’s sake, before his career gets tainted like Richter’s did at the end of his career, I hope that Hank just retires.

Even if he doesn’t retire, I think he’s played his last game as a Ranger, because no way he starts tomorrow night.

Not that it mattered that much, but I knew that DQ would not put Krav in. He’s too enamored by “his guys.” Staal, on for 3 out of 7 goals against, in the 2 games. What will it take?

  • The Canes are forechecking the Rangers senseless. They were well prepared for the Rangers. On the other hand, the Rangers have no plan, no strategy to circumvent the Canes’ forechecking. The top six, except for Kakko, seem beaten down. Sure the players play the game, but the coaches get them ready to play.

      • DQ tended to ride his top 2 lines so much during the season (e.g. Zib is on both the PK and PP) and the top 6 now looks “gassed” chasing the Canes. He’s gotta figure out how to use his bottom 6 in order to roll 4 lines during the season. DQ needs to fine-tune his own coaching next season!

  • Nothing going for the Blueshirts from the top 6 to the defense to the goalie to the Head Coach. Unprepared and out of sync. Guessing Georg is in tomorrow if Igor is still “unfit” – maybe that gives them a jolt. But these losses are not on Hank. These games were a team wide shitshow.

    • Georgi (or Igor if he can go) and Kravtsov (if Fast can’t go) … plus we get Lemieux back. Of course that would be the smart move at this point, so don’t expect them to do all 3.

    • Kakko shined, like I hoped that he would.

Howden not burying the goal, while all alone, was very, very fitting.

  • Kappo looks like a different player, more like what we expected him to be. Chytil and Howden have looked pretty good too. I expect Georgiev to get the start; he might benefit from the experience also, like the other young Rangers. Looks like we will be on to Lafrenière sweepstakes pretty soon.

King’s time has come and gone. Canes are good and our future is very bright.
