Staal, Girardi, Zuccarello to be held from training camp until next week

Per the official Rangers Twitter, defensemen Marc Staal and Dan Girardi and forward Mats Zuccarello will be held out of training camp activities for the first week. All three had offseason procedures (Staal – ankle, Girardi – bursa, Zucc – brain/skull), so it’s not surprising they will be held out. I’d expect they rejoin after the first round of cuts, which is usually comprised of the kids getting sent back to juniors.

Alain Vigneault has said all three will be ready for the start of the season.

The full training camp roster can be found here. Worth noting that Kirill Kabanov is a non-roster invitee

  1. According to what I’ve read, McDonagh will be held out as well.

    This actually might be a blessing in disguise. With half the defense out in the beginning, this means AV and Gorton can give substantial training camp and pre-season playing opportunities to McIlrath and Skjei. And, silly as it may sound, this puts Klein in a top pair role. If he is matched up against the better competition (such as it is in pre-season games) and he plays well, perhaps that increases his trade value IF the kids prove they are ready.

    Also, as a side note, AV revealed that Yandle played virtually the entire post-season with a grade 1 shoulder separation. Under the circumstances, remarkable performance.

    1. I had a very bad cold during the last series with TB; so put me on the injury list too. Seems like the only people that were not injured, were the guys who take your tickets. (;

    2. agree, this may be the opportunity of a life time for Mc Ilrath to show his stuff, without having to look over his shoulder!!!

      Skjei will spend some time in the AHL !!!!!

      1. Its now or never for Mcilrath, he realizes it too. This is why he was drafted # 10 overall, no more excuses, I hope he makes it. He can bring intangibles that we have not had since Jeff Beukaboom.

        1. Bobby we are on the same page concerning McIlrath. I’ll go a step further and say what he might, and I hope he brings, are tangible aspects that the Ranger defence lacks.

          I think the key for him will be not taking himself out of position after a hit. I believe that was something McIlrath improved on with Buke’s tutelage.

          We’ll see.

    3. I think we’re all gonna be holding our breath until Zucc takes his first big league check. I hate that the guy has to be concerned with that, especially how he likes to play the game.

  2. Not unexpected? That’s crap. If the guys are ready and healthy, they should be there. Hope this isn’t what I was afraid of.

    1. I think it is highly improbable that it’s an issue. It’s not like he’s saying they’re week to week or something. He said “next week”. All of them had some off season procedures. All are veterans who know how to get ready for a season. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

      Now, if this goes beyond a week, then we can start dialing “911” 🙂
