Some surprising news. After terminating the contract of Robin Kovacs earlier this month, the Rangers are now in the process of terminating another prospect contract. This time it’s Malte Stromwall, per Chris Johnston.

Stromwall was an undrafted free agent signed by the Rangers before the 2016-2017 season. He spent the year in the AHL witha n unimpressive line of 2-4-6 in 44 games. This year Stromwall was sent to the ECHL, where he played a pair of games.

The 23-year-old Stromwall became a spare part in the AHL with some of the newer, more skilled kids coming in. If he’s in the ECHL, it makes sense he wants to go home.

We are officially in the dog days of summer. As Rangers’ fans, we have nothing to talk about except how we differ by $250K on Mika Zibanejad’s future contract, so a good use of time would seem to be ranking the Rangers’ prospect pool. A little bit of a forward though, I will not be considering Anthony Deangelo or Pavel Buchnevich in the prospect pool as they are no longer ‘rookies’. But I will probably talk about them when we get to the top of the rankings. There is a lot that we can talk about for each prospect and while some seem to be on the verge of striking out as NHL guys, they may still have value to the organization by being good depth AHLers.

35. Adam Chapie (RW, 26, 6’1, 185 lbs)

Over the past three years, I’ve gone through the Rangers organization and ranked the top 25 players under the age of 25 years old (2013, 2014, 2015 part one, 2015 part two). The ground rules for this list are simple: To qualify for this list, a player must be under 25 years old. It doesn’t matter if this player is in the NHL, AHL, or in any of the leagues around the world. If they are Ranger property and under 25, they were considered.

First, let’s go through the players from last year’s list that no longer qualify and honorable mentions who missed the cut:

Aged out: Chris Kreider, Magnus Hellberg
No longer with the organization: Aleksi Saarela, Ryan Bourque, Petr Zamorsky, Emerson Etem, Keegan Iverson, Ryan Mantha
Honorable mentions: Tyler Nanne, Marek Hrivik, Sergey Zborovskiy, Calle Andersson, Tyler Wall, Gabriel Fontaine

The Rangers will continue to add undrafted free agents to the mix, this time signing UFA Swedish forward Malte Stromwall to a two-year entry-level deal. The 21-year-old right-handed forward played with AIK in the SHL last season, putting up a line of 24-17-42 in 49 games, leading his team in goals and points in a notoriously low scoring league.

Stromwall is a bit small (5’10”, 181 lbs), but was a potential draft sleeper in his draft year (2012). For reasons unknown, but I can venture a guess size had to do with it, he was undrafted. By all accounts he is a pretty skilled guy, and a solid add to a relatively depleted farm system.

Stromwall will join the Rangers in camp next season.
