2015 NHL Draft Open Thread: Day One

June 26, 2015, by

2015 nhl draft

Tonight is Day One of the 2015 NHL Draft, with the first round taking place over the span of three hours. The New York Rangers do not have a pick in this round, yet. There are wild rumors about what will happen with Cam Talbot, and it is expected that the Rangers will make a trade tonight to slide into the first round.

Before the draft, you should read Josh’s draft road map, which outlines who the Rangers might have available to them at any given point in the draft. All of his draft profiles can be viewed here.

This afternoon, there were three major trades, two involving the Bruins:

  • Buffalo acquired Robin Lehner and David Legwand for the 21st overall pick.
  • Bruins sent Dougie Hamilton to Calgary for the 15th, 45h, and 52nd picks in this year’s draft
  • Bruins sent Milan Lucic to Los Angeles for the 13th pick, goalie Martin Jones, and prospect Colin Miller. The Bruins retained $2.75m of Lucic’s salary.

We are live blogging the draft tonight and all day tomorrow. Be sure to join us.

6:35pm: The Bruins are rumored to be talking to Arizona for the #3 pick.

6:50pm: Apparently Ryan O’Reilly is headed to the Sabres. Not confirmed yet.

7:10pm: Trade is confirmed. ROR and Jamie McGinn to Buffalo for Nikita Zadarov, Mikhail Grigorenko, J.T. Compher and the 31st pick.

7:11pm: The Rangers and Oilers are working on the Cam Talbot trade. Should be done soon.

7:30pm: McJesus and Eichel went 1/2, as expected. Dylan Strome is going to Arizona at #3. Lots of folks thought Noah Hanifin would go here.

7:45: Mitch Marner to Toronto at #4, Hanifin to Carolina at #5.

8:05: The Rangers are not trading Talbot to San Jose, who picked Timo Meier.

8:20: Pretty uneventful right now. No real sleepers or surprises yet in the draft.

8:25: Dallas makes their pick (Denis Gurianov). So the Rangers aren’t getting the #12 either. Some folks were hoping he could slide to 16 if the Rangers get that pick. A few thought he would be a second round pick.

8:40: Boston appears to be making all three of their picks at 13, 14, and 15. This is why you don’t bank on trading for the #3. And all three picks were off the board. What the.

8:50: The Islanders, of all teams, have moved up in the draft, trading with the Oilers for the #16 pick. They also get the #33 pick. Griffin Reinhart goes to Edmonton.

9:10: Thomas Chabot is the first “sleeper” off the table. The Bs went off the board, but Chabot is supposed to be a real steal.

9:45: The Flyers and Leafs have made a trade. Flyers get the 24th pick. Leafs get 29th and 61st picks.

10:05: Tampa Bay trades down from 28 (originally NYR’s pick) to the Islanders for picks 33 and 72. This is the second year in a row the Isles will draft in the Rangers’s slot. Last year they took Josh Ho-Sang. This time, they took Anthony Beauvillier.

10:15: Toronto traded #29 pick to Columbus for picks 34 and 68.

10:20: NBCSN cuts away from draft coverage before it’s over for Track and Field. What?

10:22: New Jersey acquires Kyle Palmieri from Anaheim for the 41st pick and a 2016 3rd round pick.

Looks like Talbot to the Dallas Stars according to Dreger

  2. TommyT says:

Well today has been interesting, wonder if it keeps up tonight

    • Dave says:

      ROR to Buff apparently.

      • TommyT says:

Just saw that as well, kick in the junk if he comes East

      • "The Original Rob" says:

        Thank goodness Dave!!!

I know I’m in the minority here, but whenever I’ve seen RoR play, hes NEVER inpressed me whatsoever!

I just don’t understand the fascination with this kid…Just don’t see it, as I’d take Step over him any day of the week!!!

        • Dave says:

ROR isn’t flashy, he’s just overall solid.

          • "The Original Rob" says:

He’s GOT to be a good player somehow for sure, with all the attention he gets. I guess, from what you’re saying, being that he’s solid all around player, his attributes aren’t going to stand out as much then.

I’m sure he’s better then I think he is, but I guess I just haven’t seen enough of him.

I just have this theory about players that play at a high level in Juniors, as they tend to match that productivity eventually, at the peak of their careers in the Big League.

I saw Derek Stepan literally dominate and take over at the 2010 IIHF World U20 Championships, Stepan was the captain of the United States team and led the tournament in scoring with four goals and ten assists in seven games, leading to an All-Star Team selection. He captained the United States to win their second gold medal ever, defeating Canada in overtime. However, to me it wasn’t just his numbers in that tournament….He took control and stood out over any player in my opinion, and I believe, when he’s eventually at the peak of his career, it’s going to happen again!!!

This is why I cringe at the notion of anyone mentioning on here on not resigning him, and when there’s talk of replacing him with others, especially a guy like RoR.

            • Dave says:

He’s more like a Bergeron type. Does it all. Bergeron didn’t really get recognition until social media became a big thing.

  3. Hatrick Swayze says:

    Quite a haul for Hamilton.

So much for my thoughts earlier about CAL probably not having a want for Klein. I mean now they definitely don’t but I never thought they’d make a splash for a defenseman.

Any Boston fan who was excited about this draft just went from 6 to midnight. 3 high picks now

    • Dave says:

Hamilton is worth more than all those picks. He’s a great defenseman, he’s young, and he’s cost controlled.

      • Leatherneck says:

I don’t think he wanted to play in Boston

        • Dave says:

          Based on what?

          • Leatherneck says:

Based on reports…he handcuffed Sweeney…They had an offer he refused

            • Dave says:

Just because he refused it doesn’t mean he didn’t want to play there. Boston is in cap hell, maybe they didn’t want to pay him.

              • "The Original Rob" says:

I posted this on an older thread just before, but figured, it would be wise to put er here….

Wow! He may go for THAT high eh?

Not saying he’s not a good player Walt, but man, it seems like the market for younger offensive D-Men are going for a premium over any other positions from what I gather….What do you think? I know a lot of that depends on many things, but in general, that role gets paid!

              • Dave says:

I think there’s a general trend away from high picks for goalies and defensemen. The safer pick is the forward.

            • Chris A says:

Sweeney chickened out, he was scared to enter negotiations.

You would think more big market teams would follow Sather’s example with second contracts. I never understand why more teams don’t go the bridge contract route with their young stars. Just because Hamilton was the best D in Boston doesn’t mean he was entitled to make the most money. That cap space is precious and you shouldn’t surrender it until it is absolutely necessary.

  4. Dave says:

I think Bettman just called the Panthers an NHL powerhouse.

  5. Bloomer says:

Rangers and Oilers dealing for Talbot. It will be hard for he Rangers to replace the talented goalie without losing more cap space.

  6. Leatherneck says:

Buffalo gave up too much for O’Reilly….I wonder what the price would be on Stepan?

  7. Leatherneck says:

At that price I would trade Stepan then

    • Hatrick Swayze says:

Agree. In a heartbeat but Colorado isn’t in a position to contend for a cup. We are. In that regard it would hurt us right now

    • Dave says:

Tough call to make. Rangers are in window to win, Colorado isn’t.

  8. Leatherneck says:

Eichel did not look to happy to be selected by Buffalo….his body language was not a happy one…lol….Is he gonna sign?

  9. Leatherneck says:

Man…Don Maloney was one of my favorite Rangers….Back when who would have thought he would be a GM let alone a NHL team in Phoenix…lol

Phoenix has so much talent…They will be on the rise soon too

    • Dave says:

They need about 2-3 years, since some of their top talent is still a few years out. But Duclair-Strome-Domi could be really, really good.

    • "The Original Rob" says:

ALWAYS have LOVED Don Maloney. In my opinion he was theee man that started it all for our youth movent over the past 10 years.

Most people do not realize this, but it’s the truth!

Just, really wish, he’d get more credit for this.

Favorite Don Maloney moment was in 83 with the game tying goal against the Fishsticks, in game 4, shoulder high.

      • Dave says:

Maloney was the guy who drafted Jessiman, btw.

        • "The Original Rob" says:

HAHAHAHA! Thanks for making me look stupid Dave :-)!

Well….I guess my point is, he drafted someone at the least, rather then trading the pick away to begin with.

          • Dave says:

Was not my intention, was just kinda funny.

The real youth movement started with that 04 fire sale. Clark took over the draft in 06 I think.

            • "The Original Rob" says:

              Oh I know that buddy.

I found it to be absolutely hilarious myself 🙂

        • paulronty says:

He also drafted Korpikoski–he was awful, I mean Maloney.

  10. Leatherneck says:

I am getting a feeling Talbot is not going to get traded….Every year the price for players is getting steeper and we have a solid keeper and he has not been traded. I think GM’s conspired to say F you to Sather for years of torment….haha

Any ideas where Talbot ends up?

  11. Leatherneck says:

    Wow…..to the Islanders…..wtf

  12. Dave says:

Garth Snow just trolled the Rangers.

  13. Bloomer says:

Looks like another draft and no first round pick or the Rangers.

  14. Leatherneck says:

Talbot will not get traded. we are what we are now…..33rd pick to boot too so the 2 other 2nd round picks the spOIL have…ain’t worth the trade for Talbot.

Very disappointed in how we went about things today. Lost opportunity in my opinion

    • Tom says:

Is it possible Slats trades Talbot for a 2016 1st rounder+?

    • Dave says:

They can still land a 2nd and a prospect. My very original prediction was Marincin and the 57th pick.

      • Leatherneck says:

No thanks to that trade…..Keep Talbot

        • Dave says:

Need to trade him now. This is the highest his value will be, and the Rangers need cap space.

Not worth keeping him when he’s only playing 20 games.

          • Leatherneck says:

Not for what you mentioned….It is obvious that Sather has decided next year is the Cup run year again…Same thing will happen to Talbot that happened with Stralman and Boyle

            • Dave says:

I’m happy with a 2nd and a prospect. It was my original guess, and it’s what the market should be for him.

          • Ray says:

No it isn’t. Apparently it will never be this low.

          • "The Original Rob" says:

            Allright. Hypothetically speaking here guys.

Let’s say in an imaginary world, where Talbot plays the same amount of games this past season with the exact same record….You guys don’t think his value would be even a lil higher then it is now?

I said this yesterday, and I’m going to stick by it…..I truly don’t think Slats is THAT itchy to pull the trigger for Talbot….

I can be wrong, but this is the feeling I’m getting.

Now watch, he gets traded as soon as I say this :-).

            • "The Original Rob" says:

….You guys don’t think his value would be even a lil higher then it is now, (at the trade deadline?)***

            • Dave says:

The W/L isn’t really the thing. It’s can he put up that SV% again?

I don’t know. And that’s the thing. No one does.

  15. Leatherneck says:

Now we have to go for Justin Williams to win it all next year. After that we will be ok but just for the near future.

We have lost Cally, Boyle, Stralman and soon Talbot for no return plus given up 4 first round picks….eh…this is not good

  16. joe719 says:

Could be a larger deal is already in place involving pick(s) for next year. Who Knows. I can’t believe that Sather would risk losing a chance at trading a player at the height of his value. He has to be up to something, right?

  17. Hatrick Swayze says:

    #20 just selected.

Calgary already made a move. 2 2nds gone
Edmonton too. #16 and 33 off the board

Nothing for Klein or Talbot yet. Wtf is going on.

    • Seahorse says:

Seriously wtf happened I watch the women World cup and talbot still on the team

      • Dave says:

I always expected him to be dealt for Marincin/2nd. I still think that happens.

        • Bloomer says:

Marincin is on the trade block so a likely scenario. However, the Oilers and Rangers may however be up to something bigger. Edmonton has cap space and the Rangers have a logjam of pricey DMen.

    • joe719 says:

EDM still needs a goalie. There’s no law that says Talbot can’t be included in a bigger deal for one of the Oilers talented kids(Yakupov?) Its only June 26th; if hes on the roster opening night—then we have something to harp on.

    • Dave says:

There’s still stuff on the board. SJS, DAL, EDM have 2nds and prospects.

  18. Spozo says:

Just because they didn’t trade for a first round pick doesn’t mean they still can’t trade for a player selected in the first round this draft. What’s the difference?

  19. Leatherneck says:

Next year has to be the Cup year….or this franchise is going to be in deep trouble. We have nothing in the pipe line….in a couple of years….After Buch, Skeij, McIlrath and Lindberg we will be bone dry….

I am not liking the direction we are headed, we are fine for next year but still not a favorite to win the Cup To me this team is not Cup ready

    • Spozo says:

Step, hagelin, Kreider, miller, brassard, Zuke, mcdonagh, Staal all on the right side of 30 and the core of this team.

    • Dave says:

      Tambellini.

Although I don’t agree that the cupboard is dry after those kids, I do agree they need to win very soon.

    • "The Original Rob" says:

Come on Leather. First, how can you say they’re not cup ready lol?

There’s sooooo much parity in this league, that it’s absolutely ridiculous!

If the Rangers aren’t Cup ready then tell me who is right now lol?

ANYTHING can happen in todays NHL! YES! It’s a long shot but EVEN if Buffalo makes the playoffs, I truly wouldn’t be that surprised!!!

Just to give you a small example. Just today, did you hear what Mylanta Lucy said after he got traded to LA???

He said…”It’s a really great feeling. … I think we’re top two or three in the League right now as far as contenders.” LOL LOL…He’s talking about a team that did NOT make the playoffs this season!!! Ofcourse we ALLL know how good LA truly is, but this is what I mean by Parity, it’s crazy out there!

The Rangers are ready to win the Cup, just as much as any top tier team in the league next year, INCLUDING the Hawks my man!!!!

  20. Leatherneck says:

If the Rangers can land Jordan Greenway though it will be a win

  21. joe719 says:

Steve Zipay ‏@stevezipay 16s16 seconds ago

Rangers continue speaking with the teams interested in Talbot…

  22. Leatherneck says:

Wow…the Isles back in the 1st round…..Sad to say…but they will be good next year…and really good in a few years…..we will be good next year and then decline…..as the Isles become the real Hockey team of NY….moving past us…terrible day

  23. Jerry says:

Oh nooooooooooooooooooooooooo not the f____en Islanders!

  24. Leatherneck says:

Ok…Brandon Carlo is still around….how long will he last….so is Nick Merkley…Daniel Sprong too

  25. Dave says:

Really NBCSN? Cutting away before it’s over? Wow.

    • "The Original Rob" says:

CAN’T FIND IT GRRRRRR! Didn’t they say it was gonna be carried over to either MSNBC or CNBC?

Any of you guys watching it, not on them channels?

  26. Jerry says:

That’s three hours of my life I wasted.

  27. wwpd says:

Is Rangerland going to implode? Cam talbot not dealt for a top draft pick. Two 2nd Rd picks looking a lot better now?
