Ryan Callahan re-ups in Tampa, Rangers get 2015 2nd rounder

Ryan Callahan has re-upped in Tampa Bay on a deal that is 6 years and $5.8 million per year (basically a Dustin Brown contract, shocking). As a part of the trade with Tampa Bay for Martin St. Louis, the Rangers will receive TB’s 2nd round pick in 2015, and the Rangers will send a 2015 7th rounder to Tampa Bay. To summarize the now completed trade:

  • To New York: Martin St. Louis, 2015 2nd round pick
  • To Tampa Bay: Ryan Callahan, 2014 1st round pick, 2015 1st round pick, 2015 7th round pick

Goes to show you, maybe Callie really didn’t want to stay in NY after all???????

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s about what Sather offered him.

Callie saves on NY City, and State taxes, to the tune of some 15%, maybe it was worth the move??

Guess the pressure of being a captain on a NY sports team was too much for Cally to handle. Enjoy Tampa!

TB gave him a NTC, Slats wouldn’t do it.

      • SalMerc says:

Nor should he have. GMs are learning they need options as players age and decrease in value. Giving Cally a NTC is as bad as giving him 6 years.

Cally will make TB a better team. Not sure keeping Cally and not getting MSL would have made us a better team.

First off, wow, that’s quite the commitment from Tampa Bay. Secondly, this is the best possible outcome of the trade, and makes it much more palatable now.

Good for Callahan on getting close to what he asked for originally. I’m just glad it’s not the Rangers paying that money.

Even though he was one of my favorite players and I wish him the best, as Callahan gets older, his style of physical play will decrease and he will be less effective. He probably will be injured more often and be a twenty goal a year scorer and no more for almost six million a year. What hurts us in this trade are the two first rounders we lost, but it is some consolation that we will get a second rounder back. Also Marty will be a good player at least a couple of more years.

Cally getting this contract isn’t a huge surprise. Someone was going to pay it, the question was who.

IMO the big shocker today was the Gaborik deal. 7 years and 34 million. The AAV is pretty reasonable but he’s signed until 39. Talk about having a breakout playoff performance at the right time.
