Dreger: Rangers and Girardi agree on extension

Update: Per Darren Dreger, the Rangers and Girardi have agreed on a six-year deal worth $5.5 million, keeping Girardi on Broadway until he turns 36 years old. Per Pierre LeBrun, Girardi’s deal has a full no-movement clause for the first three years, and a modified no-trade clause the last three years.

Original Post: Per John Shannon of Sportsnet, the Rangers and defenseman Dan Girardi are closing in on an extension to keep the soon to be 30-year-old defenseman in New York for the foreseeable future. Girardi is rumored to want a six-year deal worth $5.5 million per year, which puts him right at where I estimated for the 2014-2015 payroll. The Rangers were countering with one of two deals: A six-year deal at $5 million per year or a five-year deal at $5.5 million per year.

Girardi’s current deal, which came with a $3.325 million cap hit, expires at the end of the season.

Boy, that makes the Phaneuf contract look ridiculous doesn’t it.

I guess Toronto felt that extra 10 points a year was worth an extra $1.5M a year.

Another great signing from Slats. He may offer some crazy contracts to guys on the open market but he can never be accused of bidding against himself.

Anyone else think that Girardi will be the new captain if Callahan gets dealt in the next week?

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

I do believe Girardi is the front runner for the C if Callahan leaves the org. Staal (whom the Rangers will probably look to extend during the offseason) is the clear alternative.

    • Paco33 says:

And Phaneuf’s contract is for 7 years!

This is a great signing! I am very pleased! Cally next!

  3. Spozo says:

This makes me feel a lot better. As much as I love Cally (I have a signed winter classic jersey of his) I think losing Girardi would have hurt the team worse than losing Cally. How about they sign Cally now and go on a long run!

Perfect news to end the work week on.

Top pairing for next 3 years

    McDonagh / Girardi
    4.7 mil / 5.5 mil

    10.2 mil = yes please

Also, 3 years sure beats 6 for a full no movement clause. We can’t be having him control his own destiny once he’s old damaged goods.

  5. bloomer says:

This is fair deal. Danny g is a heart and soul player he will earn his salary.

  6. supermaz says:

I guess I am in the minority, but I don’t like six years. I don’t like the no movement clause. I think Girardi is a nice player but overrated. I wish he were more physical.

  7. Chuck A says:

    Dave,

Your estimate, which actualized, makes you the Man!
    Now, get Cally signed…

Thank God we can put the Ott / Stewart rumors to rest.

    Halak/Stewart traded for Miller/Ott.

    • Chris F says:

Can’t really pick a winner to this. Blues get Miller (though they didn’t exactly have a hole in net) and Buffalo adds Stewart who could be a real nice piece for them.

But, Blues definitely get an upgrade in goal and if Stewart couldn’t get motivated playing with a contender I’m not sure he’ll be all that inspiring playing for Buffalo. I have to give the edge to the Blues here (despite Buffalo getting a few picks in the process).

The real winners in this are Miller and Ott who just went from cellar dwellers to contenders in an instant.

Does Miller make St. Louis a western conference favorite?

      • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

St. Louis was already a WC favorite. It’s still the big 5 (Chicago, San Jose, Anaheim, L.A., St. Louis), but Miller is an upgrade and only helps the Blues’ chances. The pressure was just ramped up though.

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

Good deal for both teams as Buffalo gets a first and third along with a prospect. Stewart could still be flipped, so those rumors could still persist.

The going rate for cally needs to be 5.5 per.

Either he man UPS as captain or he goes with a whimper.

  10. Leatherneckinlv says:

What a haul for Buffalo in that trade for Miller

    • Chuck A says:

Why do you think? You seem to know your stuff.

      • Leatherneckinlv says:

They get Halak…not a bad goalie…Stewart…and a 1st and 3rd…St Louis is better for a cup run now. Buffalo will be in the Lottery in 2015 with two 1st round picks for Conner McDavid…they just are building right

        • Chuck A says:

          Good insight!

        • KC says:

BUF will have 3 first round picks in 2015 since the Islanders pick this year will slide to next year BC it will be a top pick this year(as I’m sure it will be in 2015 too)… They are loading up with picks to add to their already hand full of pretty nice prospects… throw in the ton of money they have free and could you really blame Callahan if he decided to sign there?

        • Gb says:

Jack Eichel is also going to be a stud

  11. Mark says:

And that is the end to the Callahan for Stewart trade. Now what?

  12. Al says:

FTR has learned that an offer is on the table that could have Martin St. Louis on the Rangers this weekend. NY would send Ryan Callahan, a depth forward or prospect and a 3rd round pick to Tampa Bay for Martin St. Louis. A conditional pick could come back to the Rangers if the Lightning re-sign Callahan or make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. http://fulltiltnyr.com/martin-st-lou…anger-weekend/
