Per Bruce Garrioch, major grain of salt required, there are several teams interested in Rangers defenseman Will Borgen, with the Senators being one of those teams interested. Borgen has 4 years at $4 million remaining on his contract, which seems like a bargain when compared to other contracts right now. Borgen, acquired by the Rangers in exchange for Kaapo Kakko, has not been as advertised since the trade. He looked good to start last season, but quickly regressed to what his performance was like in Seattle and in his first half season with the Rangers.
Will Borgen is likely a 3RD at this point. Given the other contracts given out, he is probably a bargain on his current deal. That said, if there’s a strong offer for a player who better fits the Rangers’ system and current direction, then it’s a smart move by Chris Drury to at least listen and entertain offers.
Ottawa was recently dangling Jordan Spence, and he’d be the preferred trade target. As a reminder, just because a restricted free agent is signed doesn’t mean he’s off the trade block. It is far easier to trade someone under contract than someone who is not. This is often forgotten at this time of the year.
Can’t imagine Jordan Spence for Will Borgen is something Ottawa would even consider, just using this as an example.
