With their second third round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, the New York Rangers selected defenseman Charlie Morrison, another QMJHL player. Morrison is a 6’3, 200 lb left defenseman who is more on the defensive side of things than second rounder Ben MacBeath, putting up 4-9-13 in 41 games last season in the Q. Morrison turns 19 in October, so he’s on the older side of things in the Q as well.

McKeen’s Hockey has Morrison as an aggresive, smooth skating defenseman whose mobility is a tremendous asset in transition. He’s a solid puck mover with a high hockey IQ. He has some doubts regarding his first few steps, but that can be fixed with good coaching. He’s more of a get the puck out of the zone and up the ice defenseman, as opposed to a guy who drives play in the offensive zone.

The picks have been fine thus far with solid upside, but it’s hard not to question three defensemen and a goalie so far while the Rangers desperately need centers.
