Per Kevin Weekes, the Rangers have found Brett Berard a new home in Montreal. Berard, who was rumored to have requested a trade, found himself falling behind other kids on the depth chart. So as the Rangers trade Brett Berard to Montreal, more spots open for kids like Liam Greentre and Nathan Aspinall in Hartford. The return is 23 year old left defenseman William Trudeau, a 4th round pick in 2021.

Berard is a case of cart before horse for Rangers fans, as his 30 game stint in 2024-2025 perhaps set unrealistic expectations, as Berard simply couldn’t match that performance and fell behind both Adam Sykora and Jaro Chmelar on the depth chart. The success of Tye Kartye also shifted Berard back. Berard is also no longer waivers exempt, and the Rangers were sure to lose him on waivers if/when he didn’t break camp in the Fall.

Trudeau is more of a depth defenseman and AHL player than anything else. This is an AHL move for the Rangers to address a need for defenseman in Hartford.
