The Rangers were extraordinarily lucky when Gabe Perreault fell to them at 23rd overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Perreault was ranked the 7th overall skater by Scott Wheeler, and 22 teams passed before the Rangers grabbed him, and he has rewarded them. Perreault stuck with the Rangers for 49 games last season, finding chemistry with Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere to the tune of 12 goals and 15 assists. Perreault looked solid with the man advantage as well, before JT Miller’s return shifted him off the top unit.

Gabe Perreault was recalled for the November 10 game against Nashville, notching an assist and playing in two more games before being returned to Hartford. Concerns over the Rangers being too cautious were quickly put to rest when the Rangers recalled him again in December. Perreault stuck from then on, recording 12 goals and 14 assists in 46 games.

Though Perreault would only add another 3 goals and 4 assists through the end of February, playing primarily with Will Cuylle and Vincent Trocheck at the time, he ended the season with 9 goals and 10 assists in those 23 games, nearly a point per game pace, recording a hat trick against Detroit in April as well. All in all, Gabe Perreault’s season can be broken down into three segments.

  • First call up: 3 games, 1 assist
  • December through February: 23 games, 3 goals, 4 assists
  • March and April: 23 games, 9 goals, 10 assists

That was enough to put Gabe Perreault into the top ten in scoring for the Blueshirts and give Perreault a launching pad into next season. Perreault looks like a bonafide top line winger who could be a star for the Blueshirts. If his 19 points in the final 23 games is a predictor of future success, he’s a 70 point winger with room to grow, both in terms of powerplay points and consistent usage at 5v5. Perreault is the real deal.

That said, Gabe Perreault still has a few areas to work on. His defensive play needs to improve, though to be fair it’s not really his role on the team. We’d prefer he be a bit more passable on defense. His play driving away from the puck could use some work too, though this may simply be a product of deployment and usage early in the season. Not much to worry about, just a note that his ceiling is still sky high.
