Legendary Rangers goaltending coach Benoit Allaire will retire after free agency this year. Allaire, who joined the Rangers in 2004, has seen two all-world goalies in Henrik Lundqvist and Igor Shesterkin for almost the entirety of his tenure. He also helped produce a number of backups that became starters in the NHL, including Cam Talbot, Alex Georgiev, and Antti Raanta. Allaire’s final act was revitalizing Jonathan Quick and resurrecting his career as the Rangers backup.
Allaire should be in the Hall of Fame if/when he’s eligible. I’m not entirely sure how those rules work, so someone far smarter will have to help us with that. Allaire is the best goaltending coach to come through the NHL, and though the Rangers are in fine hands with Jeff Malcolm, no one is Benoit Allaire.
The Rangers will miss him dearly. Congrats on your retirement, Benny.
