The New York Rangers must trade Sam Carrick. There is no more debate about whether to keep the 34 year old center with one year left after this at a very reasonable $1 million. We’ve seen far inferior players like Michael McCarron get a 2nd round pick and somewhat comparable players like Nic Roy get a 1st and a 5th round pick. The market for centers is the highest it will be, and with a chance they could get a 1st round pick, the Rangers must trade Sam Carrick.

This has nothing to do with Carrick as a Ranger. He’s been a solid Ranger, and one of the only bright spots over the last two seasons in New York. However when you have the possibility of turning a fourth line player into a 1st round pick, it’s a no-brainer.

Roy may have more points than Carrick, but Carrick is far better defensively and is an effective penalty killer. Given he’s on the Rangers, the fact that he is near neutral in driving offense is probably a good thing and he should see those numbers go up on a better team.

It’s a no-brainer at this point. The Rangers must trade Sam Carrick. This is how rebuilds/retools are done. You maximize value, and this is the highest his value will be.
