In addition to Rangers that should be kept during the retool, it’s natural that we start identifying Rangers that should be traded. Not all of these players are going to be traded, but Drury should at least be exploring the market to see if he gets blown away with an offer. Unfortunately there are a few Rangers that should be traded that won’t, either due to some delusion they are a good fit or because they simply can’t be traded.
Would be nice, but not happening
JT Miller: It’s asinine that the Rangers aren’t moving heaven and earth trying to undo their horrible mistake of acquiring JT Miller. Miller will leave New York eventually having been the worst decision of Chris Drury’s career, the worst captain in Rangers history, and a debacle of a Rangers player. I would try to put in some effort to defend him, but Miller gave up on effort and defense years ago. Of all the Rangers that should be traded, I will throw a party if he is gone.
Kids that could be moved
Braden Schneider and Will Cuylle: I’ve written before on them. Schneider and Cuylle represent the best two options at getting another team to bite on players who are young, but not all that good. The Rangers should be stealthily trying to get the best value for these two while they still have strong reputations around the league. Sadly, Drury will likely keep both.
Adam Edstrom: Edstrom is a fine young forward for any team’s bottom six. He is also easily replaceable.
Brennan Othmann: Normally a player like Othmann would fall into the keep category, but Othmann just doesn’t seem to be a very good player. The Rangers have already strongly considered trading him, and it seems like he won’t be a Ranger for very long.
Noah Laba: Laba is a good, young centerman who at best is a career third-liner. Much like Will Cuylle, Laba is not a player you build around. I’m sure the Rangers will and should keep him, but if someone throws you a second or third-round pick, it would be an odd decision to say no.
Scott Morrow: I don’t want to see Scott Morrow moved, but he has not been very good for the Rangers and other teams may value Morrow more than the Rangers do. Don’t shop him, but don’t turn down overtures.
Doesn’t really matter
Jonny Brodzinski: Seems like a good guy! Is not an important player.
Urho Vaakanainen: Don’t know how he is as a guy! Is not an important player.
Matthew Robertson: If some team badly wants a seventh defenseman, they can have him.
Taylor Raddysh: Not good, not horrible, just kind of there. Whatever.
Rangers that should be traded
Artemi Panarin: Failing to trade Panarin would be the worst decision in decades for the Rangers. Panarin represents free assets at this point. All the team needs to do is keep him healthy and pick the best package. Thanks for the points, move on. He’s being held out, which is good, but they need to move him, and they need to bring back an absolute haul.
Vincent Trocheck: It’s possible the Rangers don’t get a good enough package for Trocheck, but this is a great chance for the team to continue to retool the roster and take advantage of a weak market. Trocheck could bring back even more than Panarin.
Sam Carrick: I love Sam Carrick, he’s been a great Ranger, but the Rangers have no need for an aging fourth-line center making $250K more than a typical fourth-line center needs to. Let Carrick chase a championship.
Note: Carson Soucy was listed as one of the Rangers that should be traded. He’s obvious gone.
