As the trade season heats up, we will begin to get some clarity around what the Rangers are up to. We do know the Rangers considered themselves buyers as recently as the Winter Classic, with interest in Kiefer Sherwood. The asking price was a 1st round pick and more, which Vancouver is unlikely to get. We do know the Rangers offer for Kiefer Sherwood did not include a 1st round pick, but it included at least one “young player with pedigree” and a 2nd round pick, per Chris Johnston.
Based on what Johnston is reporting, it’s clear the offer was Brennan Othmann and a 2nd round pick. The timing of the offer is unclear. It’s likely the original offer came in mid-December when Othmann was recalled and played five games around Christmas time before being returned to Hartford. Othmann’s most recent recall was just five days ago, so it’s unlikely the offer came then as both Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox were already out long term and the Rangers had just lost 5-2 and 10-2 to Buffalo and Boston, respectively.
Vancouver rejected this offer, probably saving Chris Drury from himself. At least the Rangers offer for Kiefer Sherwood didn’t include a 1st round pick, but Drury appeared to be wasting another pair of trade assets for a rental when the team was clearly no good. The timing is questionable at best, though now it looks like Drury has reversed course.
