I remember it like it was yesterday. I was pacing the basement of my Mom’s house, far away from the company I was supposed to be helping entertain. Nothing could have gotten me away from the TV my eyes were transfixed on. The New York Rangers game hadn’t started yet, but I could not be pulled away. You might think I’m telling the tale of a Game 7. Nope. I’m telling you the story of my experience getting ready to watch the Rangers play in their first Winter Classic. Now though, the Winter Classic wow factor has all but disappeared, and I no longer have that hype.

See, the Winter Classic used to mean something. Back when Mike Rupp did the Jagr salute, Henrik Lundqvist stoned Daniel Briere, and John Tortorella gave awesome sound bites. Now, the Classic is just another game on the schedule. There is no hype. They don’t even do it on New Year’s Day anymore, having lost that war to NCAA bowl games. It’s sad to see the Winter Classic Wow Factor completely disappear, but this is on the NHL now.

The 2014 Stadium Series was awesome because of the back-to-back games against the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. I’d personally argue the Rangers playing the Buffalo Sabres in the 2018 Winter Classic was incredibly dull, but I understand others who disagree. At least 2024’s matchup against the Islanders was fun, mostly because of how wild the game was.

We’re about to enter 2026, and the Rangers are playing again in the Winter Classic, this time against the Florida Panthers, a team the Rangers have little-to-no rivalry with. Sure, the teams played in the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, but make no mistake about it, this is a matchup put together so there’s a big market team. I want to care very badly about this game.

I will be honest, it’s important to me I get to watch the game. Though this is true of all Rangers games, there’s a little bit extra with an outdoor game. That being said, this article came to me because I only learned today that the game will be on January 2nd (as opposed to the usual New Year’s Day), and will be played at 8 PM (as opposed to the usual day-time start).

I don’t necessarily have anything against this setup, but I find it does take away from the ambiance of it all and ruins the Winter Classic wow factor. Gary Bettman created a beautiful tribute to the sport in the Winter Classic, then immediately went to work on minimizing its value and importance.

So when the puck drops on January 2nd, I will certainly be watching. There will likely be major storylines like the return of Adam Fox and the likely return of Matthew Tkachuk, though that has not yet been fully confirmed. I’m sure there will be a fight from Matt Rempe, some moments that Rangers and Panthers fans (only Rangers and Panthers fans) will remember for 3-4 years, and more.

I will be watching.

I won’t be pacing the room.
