Jonny Brodzinski report card

The forward report cards are almost done, as it’s just Jonny Brodzinski and Matt Rempe left. Brodzinski made a name for himself in 2023-2024, turning a call up into an extended look and a well earned two year contract extension. Brodzinski was again overall fine for the Rangers, playing in 51 games and scoring a solid 12 goals and 19 points. Brodzinski was actually 8th on the Rangers in goals last season. In a predominately fourth line role. Go figure.

Like most Rangers, Brodzinski struggled in his own end. He had a pretty sharp drop off from his solid two-way play in 2023-2024, but it’s hard to pin all of that on Brodzinski. He essentially graduated from AAAA player to the 13F role and the expectations shouldn’t be sky high. He’s a decent depth and role player who did his job to the best of his ability.

Brodzinski spent most of his ice time with Sam Carrick and Matt Rempe, a fourth line that certainly missed Adam Edstrom once he went down with an injury. Carrick carried the line, and Edstrom’s injury really illustrated that Brodzinski is a bit more of a passenger than a driver. That’s perfectly fine for his role, but expecting more at this point in his career may not be fair to him.

It is worth noting his xGAR was significantly higher than his GAR, suggesting there was offensive ability left on the table due to playing most of his time in more of a defensive role with linemates that aren’t necessarily played for their offense. It’s an interesting tidbit to watch for next season.

Ideally, Brodzinski is the team’s 13/14F again this year, rotating with Matt Rempe on the fourth line based on matchup. Brodzinski is more of a part time player. A solid option, mind you, but a part time player nonetheless.
