Just before the Mike Sullivan news broke last night, Joe Micheletti announced his retirement from the Rangers broadcast booth. Joe was in the booth with Sam Rosen for 19 years after Joe replaced the departing John Davidson. As Joe Micheletti retires, the Rangers will have a brand new TV broadcast booth with Kenny Albert and a color guy to be announced later. Speculation has led to Ryan Callahan or Brian Boyle as potential candidates.
It’s worth noting that Joe actually retired, and was not asked to leave. This means he allowed the spotlight to be on Sam Rosen during his farewell tour, a truly classy move by Joe. He wasn’t everyone’s favorite, but it’s clear he and Sam had great chemistry. I did enjoy his goal reviews when he said “and then the Rangers go to work.” Work, of course, appeared to be optional for this year’s team.
It’s truly the end of an era for the Rangers. Sam and Joe are gone. Chris Kreider is likely gone. The new core is going to be established and take the Rangers into their next era with Sullivan at the helm.
