The New York Rangers have re-signed defenseman Will Borgen to a five year contract. Borgen, the centerpiece in the Kaapo Kakko trade, has been excellent as a Ranger, stabilizing the second pair and hopefully bringing K’Andre Miller back to life. Borgen’s speed and ability to get the puck out of the defensive zone have been invaluable to a Rangers team that desperately needed those two skills on the blue line.

Borgen’s five year contract comes with a $4.1 million cap hit, very manageable as the cap ceiling is projected to rise to $95 million next season. The contract comes with two years of a full no-trade clause, followed by a 10 team no-trade, a 6 team no-trade, and then no trade protection at all.
