The bad 2024-2025 season gets worse for the New York Rangers, as they will place Igor Shesterkin on IR with an upper body injury. This is obviously another big blow to a team that can’t seem to do anything right, and now without their star goaltender, things will likely get even worse. Shesterkin was far from the problem with the Rangers this season, and there’s a strong argument that he’s one of the main reasons they managed to win a handful of games in December.
Louis Domingue was recalled by the Rangers, and he will serve as the backup to Jonathan Quick with Shesterkin on IR. Quick has been solid this season as well, and perhaps there’s a mental reset with the Rangers defensive play with their backup in net. There’s a human element to feeling comfortable with your All-World goalie in net to cover for your mistakes. Quick can cover, but not at Shesterkin’s level.
The optimist says the Rangers will get a mental reset and be able to clamp down defensively. The realist says this probably doesn’t change anything with their play on the ice. The pessimist says they will lose more games, which I”m not sure is even possible right now.
Whatever your cope is, get it ready for the next few games.
