It’s time to shift our offseason reviews to the defensemen, starting with our 2024 Adam Fox report card. Fox is usually the easiest defenseman to grade, mostly because he’s simply that good. Fox set a career high in goals last season with 17, adding 56 assists for 73 points on the year. This was despite missing 10 games due to what looked like a pretty rough knee injury.

What makes Fox’s scoring line so impressive is his 6-27-33 line on the powerplay and 1-1-2 line shorthanded, meaning he put up 10-28-38 at even strength in 72 games. He’s a top-three defenseman in the league and by far the best defenseman on the Rangers. He does all this while playing 23 minutes a night facing top competition. He also had the added issue of Ryan Lindgren’s down year, one that is hopefully a blip and not a trend.

Fueling Fox’s 17 goals was a 50% increase in his shooting rate, converting at 12.4% as opposed to his career average 7.8%, still high for a defenseman. The goals likely won’t be repeated, but that probably means more tips and rebounds, so more assists. That’s not a negative on Fox’s season, just something to point out as we gear up for the 2024-2025 season.

There isn’t much else to say about him. Even at $9.5 million a season, he’s a bargain.
