With the offseason slowing to a crawl and only one (or two) pieces of the puzzle left, we can shift back to report card season. We rushed some out earlier for players rumored to be on the block, and now we can focus on the rest of the roster. Starting with a 2024 Artemi Panarin report card, we see a star who shattered career highs and should have been in the Hart Trophy conversation.
Panarin set career highs across the board with 49 goals, 71 points, and 120 points. Panarin flirted with Rangers single season records in all 3 categories, falling 5 goals (Jaromir Jagr – 54), 9 assists (80 – Brian Leetch), and 3 points (Jagr) shy of setting new records.
To put this season into perspective: The next highest scoring Ranger was Vincent Trocheck with 77 points. Chris Kreider had 39 goals, and Adam Fox had 56 assists. Without Artemi Panarin, the Rangers do not win the Metro Division or the President’s Trophy.
It wasn’t just the score sheet either, as Panarin was the key cog on the Rangers top line with Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere. Panarin drove offensive play and continued his evolution into more of a defensive play driver as well. Panarin’s role was to be the best skater on the ice for the Rangers, and he did just that.
Since this will come up, Panarin’s line on the powerplay was 11-33-44, and he had one shorthanded assist. That brings his even strength numbers to 38-37-75, close to a point per game at even strength. He was no powerplay merchant.
In the playoffs, Panarin put up a line of 5-10-15 in 16 games. He was actually third in scoring behind a white-hot Trocheck (8-12-20) and a surprising Mika Zibanejad (3-13-16). There is some bias in his numbers, but it’s worth noting he still put up 1-3-4 in 6 games against Florida while getting shadowed by Aleksander Barkov. He put up 2-6-8 in 6 games against Carolina, and 2-1-3 in 4 games over Washington.
Panarin’s regular season was stellar, and his playoffs were fine, if a tad muted because he wasn’t needed to be stellar against Washington and Barkov is basically the new Patrice Bergeron at this point. I saw nothing wrong with his play, but that’s relatively subjective. After all, report card grades are subjective. He had a role to be a leading scorer, and he did just that.
