The New York Rangers made their 5th round selection, taking left winger Nathan Aspinall out of the OHL’s Flint Firebirds. Aspinall is yet another giant at 6’6, but is only 185 lbs so there is room to grow. Aspinall put up 18-16-34 in his first full season with Flint, his age-17 season (he turned 18 in March).

The Rangers love their giants in these rounds, with Matt Rempe, Adam Edstrom, and Dylan Roobroeck leading the way. They are all cut of the same cloth: Good skaters for their size with good reads and an ability to move the puck. Given how well Rempe and Edstrom have turned out, perhaps the Rangers have found a nice little niche at the draft.
