As expected and rumored, the San Jose Sharks have claimed Barclay Goodrow off waivers. The Sharks had the top waiver priority and wasted no time in claiming a former fan favorite. This is great for the Rangers, who shed the full cap hit without any buyout repercussions down the road. They have the full $3.64 million available to them this offseason.

For San Jose, they get a good locker room guy that can help their rebuild by setting the proper environment and mental state. They also needed to get to the cap floor, and Goodrow’s $3.64 million helps them greatly.

What most likely happened is San Jose either didn’t want to give up any pieces to land Goodrow in a trade, or Goodrow said no to San Jose before being waived and claimed. San Jose also gets a pretty valuable trade deadline chip, because NHL GMs love past Cup winners that play multiple positions.
