Rangers Recap

The Rangers came out in the first game post-deadline and gave us their best win of the season. In Igor Shesterkin‘s 200th NHL game and Vincent Trocheck’s 700th NHL game, we got a 26 game shutout and balanced scoring from the revamped lineup. The Rangers might not have gotten the big fish at the deadline, but make no mistake, they look like a well-balanced lineup now, with no real weak link on the ice.

Starting with the fourth line, both Jimmy Vesey and Matt Rempe were visibly solid and Barclay Goodrow was part of a line driving play up the ice with an assist as well. Vesey got a breakaway goal, and Rempe looked like he scored off the rush but the overhead camera did not let us have fun.

Lacking points on the scoresheet, Rempe still had a massive impact. Every time Rempe went in on the forecheck, defenders would try to rush play, and would turn the puck over in the zone. This is how he can be effective night in and night out, and he is showing he is extremely coachable.

Part of the winning formula for this Rangers team is also their power play. With so much fire power, it’s only natural that the amount of skill they have will make things happen. The power play converted for 3 goals, with the second powerplay unit adding a goal for what feels like the first time in forever. A balanced attack with two strong powerplay units is a recipe for success in the playoffs.

Putting his rough January behind him, Igor Shesterkin has shown why he’s one of the best goalies in the league. This is the Igor that is going to lead this team for a chance at a Cup. The Rangers stars are going to need to carry them, and it starts with Shesterkin. With him playing lights out and the top guys contributing, the Rangers are primed for a deep run in the playoffs.
