Benoit Allaire and Jonathan Quick

Per Kevin Weekes, the Rangers are re-signing Jonathan Quick to a 1 year contract extension. Quick has been a revelation for the Rangers, carrying them while Igor Shesterkin was working through his midseason issues. An afterthought at his original signing, Quick’s resurgence has been a pleasure to watch and a core reason why the Rangers have held onto first place in the Metro.

The cap hit isn’t known yet, but it’s expected to be somewhere in the minimum salary range. Quick has been a bargain, and part of his appeal is that bargain rate. Assuming he keeps up a backup goalie average, he will be worth it.

To keep expectations on planet Earth, he’s not going to be a .920 SV% goalie, especially at 38 years old and as a backup. Staying about .900 is the expectation.

Update: Per Mollie Walker, the contract is $1.275 million. Much higher than the original hope. The cap hit matters here, since Quick is no longer on a bargain contract. He now has expectations to live up to.
