Per Larry Brooks, the Rangers are showing interest in Seattle’s Alex Wennberg, a name that we first mentioned in November. The Alex Wennberg rumors at least pass the sniff test, as he fits most of what the Rangers are looking for: pending UFA, middle of the lineup center, and offensive upside that can slot into the middle of the lineup.
Wennberg joins names like Yanni Gourde, Adam Henrique, and apparently Scott Laughton as centers tied to the Rangers. But like with most rumors, take this with a grain of salt. Not all rumors are created equal, and sometimes we need to take a step back to see what truly makes sense.
Unlike the Laughton rumor, the Alex Wennberg rumor does at least pass the sniff test for the Rangers. Seattle is no longer in the playoff hunt and the Rangers have been known to be scouting them heavily this month. Wennberg also checks more boxes than guys like Gourde and Laughton, who both come with additional term.
On the bright side, Wennberg’s acquisition cost likely wouldn’t include anything significant. He certainly wouldn’t cost a 1st round pick, something that should be reserved for a 1RW, if needed.
