In the dynamic realm of hockey, the sport offers a plethora of highlights that linger in our memories. The New York Rangers, a team with a rich history, have contributed numerous moments that resonate with many fans. In this feature titled “Remember When,” we delve into some of these moments—some noteworthy, others less so.

In this particular installment of “Remember When,” we revisit Brendan Shanahan’s 600th career goal, and it came on Opening Night in his first game as a New York Ranger.

In a triumphant Rangers debut, Shanahan swiftly made his mark by scoring his 599th and 600th career goals against Olaf Kolzig on October 5, 2006. The season-opening win against the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden witnessed Shanahan’s historic achievement, as he became only the 15th player in NHL history to reach the coveted 600-goal milestone. Petr Prucha played a pivotal role, providing assists for both of Shanahan’s goals.

On the same night, just moments after being named team captain, Jagr, following in the footsteps of his predecessor Mark Messier, wasted no time in leaving his mark. Needing only 29 seconds, Jagr netted his first goal of the season, setting the Rangers on the path to victory.

However, Shanahan outshone even Jagr by scoring twice in his Rangers debut. Shanahan’s milestone goal, extending his career total eight goals ahead of Jagr, occurred 2:58 into the third period during a delayed penalty. The significance of the moment was highlighted as Jagr, with characteristic sportsmanship, raced to secure the puck and then handed it to Shanahan in celebration.
