rangers recall connor makey

There were 3 Rangers roster moves between yesterday and this morning, setting the Rangers up to finally accrue cap space over the next few weeks. Nick Bonino cleared waivers and was sent to the Hartford Wolf Pack. Both Jake Leschyshyn and Connor Mackey were returned this morning after last night’s win over Ottawa.

Bonino’s salary coming off the books is the big one, as his salary gets the Rangers under their LTIR threshold and they can finally begin accruing cap space again. They desperately need an answer to the Filip Chytil injury, as the setback the other day was a gut punch for sure. Accruing cap space helps them be a bit more flexible.

For what it’s worth, it looks like the Rangers were using emergency loan rules for Leschyshyn, Mackey, and a bunch of other call ups this season. Again, LTIR rules are confusing, but it looks like those types of moves helped them avoid going too far into their LTIR pool.

As an aside, Bonino will not report to Hartford immediately, as the organization wants to respect his previously planed vacation with his family for the bye week.
