The Rangers have returned top prospect Brennan Othmann to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. Othmann appeared in three games for the Rangers, getting mostly bottom-six minutes. He also filled in on the top-six when opportunities arose, like penalties, fights, and a desperate search for a 1RW in the third period last night.
Othmann’s return to Hartford was expected, as this was always going to be a quick look to see where he’s at. The Rangers obviously don’t want to stunt his growth and, quite honestly, don’t need to rush him. He looked solid in his first three games, coming in with a shoot-first mentality. He will get a long, long look next season.
Even though Othmann has been returned to Hartford, Kaapo Kakko is not ready for a return just yet. Dan Rosen is noting the Rangers will make another call up later today, likely after 5pm.
I’m told the Rangers will recall someone else later today. They like Othmann and believe he showed flashes. They want to allow him to continue to develop in Hartford for now but they’re happy he got a taste of the NHL because they believe he will be better for it. https://t.co/KJ2VJvq1rK

Given the roster in Hartford, the smart money would have been on Adam Edstrom getting another look if he weren’t hurt. Edstrom looked good in his recall as well, and perhaps fits the 4C role better than others on the roster. Kakko’s return is nearing, and that will be a welcomed return when it happens.
