Chad Wiseman

As time passes, and we avidly follow our favorite sports teams, many players come and go. While we may recall them during their time with the team, some slip through the crevices of our memory, only to resurface through a nostalgic memory or an old piece of media, causing us to reconnect their faces and names with the iconic Rangers uniform.

Among the hallowed names like Messier, Leetch, Giacomin, Lundqvist, and others, there are those more unknown Rangers, such as Pascal Dupuis and Ilkka Heikkinen, Enver Lisin, and others who may have faded from our recollection. As we traverse the regular season, we’ll delve into a few of these “Forgotten Rangers.” In this edition, we feature a Chad and a Chris.

Chad Wiseman, Left Wing

Time with Rangers: Total of 5 games between 2003-2006

This name was a complete mystery to me until I ventured into some deep research. The wealth of information you can uncover is truly remarkable. Throughout his career, Wiseman navigated between the NHL, AHL, and various European leagues.

Wiseman started his NHL career in the 2002-03 season with the San Jose Sharks, making a brief appearance in only four games. On August 12, 2003, San Jose traded Wiseman to the New York Rangers in exchange for Nils Ekman. His contribution to the 2003–2004 season amounted to just one game, in which he managed to score a solitary goal. Quite impactful, wouldn’t you say?

Post the NHL lockout, Wiseman participated in four games during the 2005-2006 season for New York, notching one assist. He also marked his playoff debut in the first round for the Rangers that season. Despite signing with the Capitals in the subsequent offseason, he spent the majority of his time in the AHL with Hershey, never stepping onto the ice for Washington.

After a series of ventures in Europe and the AHL, Wiseman eventually called it a career in 2014. Taking on the roles of general manager and coach for the New York Riveters in the National Women’s Hockey League, he transitioned further and currently holds the position of head coach for the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League.

Chris Holt, Goaltender

Time with Rangers – 10 minutes in one game during the 2005-06 season

Chris Holt’s story with the Rangers is rather succinct. Drafted 180th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, his time in New York was primarily spent in the minor leagues, shuttling between the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack and the ECHL’s Charlotte Checkers.

In December 2005, he was called up to serve as the backup for Henrik Lundqvist when the incumbent Kevin Weekes was injured. Holt played just over 10 minutes in one game, making two saves in his sole appearance as a Ranger before being sent back to Hartford. And that was the extent of Chris Holt’s stint with the Blueshirts.

Following a season in the Rangers’ minor league system, Holt ventured to the St. Louis Blues, signing in October 2008. He made another appearance as an emergency backup for Chris Mason in February 2009, playing 19 minutes, allowing no goals, and making 3 saves.

Since then, his hockey journey has taken him from the Senators’ training camp to the AHL and back to the ECHL. His adventures also include stops in Russia, Austria, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

He’s also part of a Latvian band called “Ice Wolf” where he sings and does covers of songs. It’s not terrible and certainly has done him a lot better than the ten minutes he had as a Ranger.
