Rounding out the roster cuts today, the Rangers have waived defenseman Ben Harpur. This was another expected move, as the Rangers weren’t going to risk losing Zac Jones on waivers just to keep Harpur around. The Rangers will go with Adam Fox, K’Andre Miller, Ryan Lindgren, Jacob Trouba, Erik Gustafsson, Braden Schneider, and Jones on defense.
Appleby, Cholowski, Durandeau, Hutton, Koivula, Kuhlmann, Ladue, Pinho, Salo, Skarek (NYI); Brodzinski, Harpur (NYR); Allison (PHI); Carpenter, Lindblom, Peterson (SJ); Aube-Kubel, Limoges, McIlrath, Sgarbossa, Shepard, Snively (WASH).

For those wondering why the Rangers can’t lose Jones on waivers, but have no concerns with Harpur and Jonny Brodzinski on waivers, it’s about age and ceiling. Harpur and Brodzinski are spare parts. Jones can be a viable NHL defenseman who is just 22 years old. Context matters.
