Emberson is not on the radar for an NHL spot this season, or likely for a while. At best, he’s the 9D behind the starting six, Zac Jones or Erik Gustafsson, and Ben Harpur. If Emberson is playing, something went horribly wrong for the Rangers.
That said, Emberson has been solid since his acquisition in the Patrik Nemeth trade. He’s been a key contributor for a Hartford team that has seen a pretty extreme turnaround over the last 12 months.
Something to watch: Emberson’s re-signing gives the Rangers 46 contracts (max 50). Alexis Lafreniere makes 47, and if the Rangers give Lauri Pajuniemi and Brandon Scanlin contracts, that makes 49 contracts, limiting trade flexibility down the road. Adam Sykora and Bryce McConnell-Barker’s contracts can slide bringing the number down to a more manageable 47 contracts, but that will be determined closer to the start of the season.
