Jimmy Vesey is the NY Rangers 2023 Masterton nominee. The award, given annually to “the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game,” has nominees from all 32 NHL teams. Usually we have an idea of who the winners are before they are announced. This year though we don’t have a clear cut favorite, at least to my knowledge.
Vesey had a few rough seasons, dropping off offensively while retooling his game into a shutdown forward. He’s now one of the best bargains in the NHL, with 11 goals and 25 points for league minimum while playing primarily in a bottom six role. The Rangers inked him to close to league minimum for the next two seasons as well. It may not be a true comeback story, but it’s certainly one that reminds us of Anton Stralman about 10 years ago.
