2023 NY Rangers prospect rankings - Brennan Othmann AHL

It’s never dull in Rangers-land, and last week we got our dose of drama when “news” broke that 2022 2nd-round pick Adam Sykora had been charged with a crime after a floor hockey fight broke out. That turned out to be a poor translation, as Sykora was not charged and managed to chip in with two assists against HV Slovan, including the one below off a nice controlled zone entry. Sykora will be Slovakia’s most important forward at the upcoming World Junior Championship for a team that could be a dark horse to medal.

In other news, 2021 1st-round pick Brennan Othmann officially made Team Canada’s tournament roster. It is unclear what Canada’s lines will look like at this point, but it stands to reason that Othmann will have a larger role than the last tournament.

He will be joined by Don Mills Flyers teammates Shane Wright and Brandt Clarke, and it would not be a surprise to see Othmann play on Shane Wright’s wing for likely the last time ever. Othmann scored the golden goal for the Don Mills team in the 2019 OHL Cup off assists from Wright and Clarke.

We should find out more about Noah Laba’s fate with Team USA in the coming week. I lean towards it being a long shot that he makes the roster, but again, nobody thought he would even be considered for the team 6 months ago so we will see.

2023 Draft Prospect of the Week

Lukas Dragicevic, RHD,  6’2″, 181, Tri-City Americans (WHL), Canada

In a draft that appears to have a dearth of promising defensive prospects, Dragicevic stands out. Dragicevic leads the WHL in scoring and points per game among defensemen with 37 points in 27 games, and is riding a 21-game point streak during which he has amassed 30 points.

Most draft rankings list him as a bubble first-rounder, with his skating ability the main point of contention, but it is hard to see him staying in that range if he continues to produce in what many consider to be the CHL’s most difficult league – and this is a very strong year for the WHL. If he stays in the 20’s range, the Rangers would likely have the chance to select him.

His arrival would likely match up with the departure of Jacob Trouba in three seasons (or sooner), and he would add a dynamic offensive element that would help take some of the load off of Fox.
