Jonny Brodzinski earned a roster spot, but will he keep it?

The Rangers have made a trio of roster moves in advance of tonight’s matchup against Chicago. They have recalled forward Johnny Brodzinski and defenseman Ben Harpur, while returning defenseman Zac Jones to the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.

This is a bit of a surprising move, as the Rangers already had 13 forwards with Ryan Carpenter a healthy scratch over the last few games. There is no news of him hitting waivers yet, but it wouldn’t be a surprise. Brodzinski adds more speed to a team that has been slow, and depending on who he replaces in the lineup, it could be an upgrade.

That said, while Zac Jones hasn’t exactly been lights out, he is miles better than Ben Harpur. Harpur isn’t good. Period. But if it’s a question as to where Jones is better off, top minutes in Hartford may be the better answer. Whether the losing environment there impacts him, we won’t know.

In the grand scheme of things, these moves don’t really move the needle much for the Rangers. Their issues are far deeper than a few AHL tweeners and a prospect needing more time.
