The Rangers have signed Jimmy Vesey to a PTO in advance of training camp. The Vesey PTO had been rumored for a while, with the NY Post first reporting the Rangers were looking to bring back Vesey about a month ago.

Vesey is likely insurance for the Rangers 3LW spot. It looks like Brennan Othmann will get a long look, likely into 9 regular season games. Sammy Blais may be an option, but he’s been a career 4th liner so far. Vesey is an interesting buy-low candidate with, at the very least, respectable puck possession metrics. He had horrible on-ice luck last year, so perhaps, if he makes the team, that changes.
People love to panic over which kid Vesey will replace, but I don’t think that’s an issue here. There are no kids aside from Othmann who are truly ready for 3LW work. Sometimes, you just throw stuff at a wall and see what sticks. I’d also expect a 3LD PTO announcement at some point.
If Vesey makes the team on a PTO, it will likely be more about Othmann needing more time than anything else.
